For whom the bell tolls

No man is an island…

Ask not

For whom the bell tolls,

It tolls for thee.

– John Donne

The truth of that famous Donne quote, made even more famous (and proverbial) by Hemingway’s For Whom The Bell Tolls, has never been more obvious than it is now in the midst of a global pandemic.

There are no islands.

If it is happening somewhere, it will touch you.

The interview references Niemöller. His words are food for thought.

Martin Niemöller:

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
